Access Statement

Here at The Bell Inn at Adderbury we welcome people with disabilities and have developed our Access Statement to address some of the more common issues that disabled people face. This access statement is intended to provide additional information for all guests who wish to stay at our inn.

Recognition has been given to include guests with all forms of impairment, although we are unable to offer overnight accommodation to wheel-chair dependant guests due to the limited access to our bedrooms. Our Guest accommodation does not have any bedrooms on the ground floor and the inn does not possess a lift. We have been advised that it would be dangerous to install a chair lift.

Although the stairs are not particularly steep, we are unable to offer suitable accommodation for wheelchair users, people with severe heart conditions, and anyone not able to use the stairs, however help will be given to find a suitable alternative in the area.

We request that anyone wishing to make an enquiry or booking, inform us of any special needs or disabilities that they may have in order for us to try and meet any personal requirements. Our fully trained staff assist disabled guests with empathy.

We have two letting rooms which are situated on the first floor of the premises:

  • Our twin room is accessible via three steps leading down to the doorway and has a private bathroom at the upper level. The bathroom has a conventional style bath and integrated shower.
  • Our double/family room, on the main first floor, has an en suit shower room.

The High Street in Adderbury is serviced by the Stagecoach 59 service which runs between Banbury Bus Station and Oxford, Monday to Saturday. Timetables are available to download at www.stagecoachbus.com/timetables/59w300308.pdf. The railway station is about a quarter of a mile from the bus station!

A Taxi from Banbury currently costs £7.00 during the day and a local Adderbury company has cars that have disabled passenger facilities and can be booked in advance by phoning 01295 811555.

We do not have our own car-park but on street parking is readily available to the front of the premises. There is a small kerb between the road and pavement but a lowered kerb can be found a few yards away from the premises.

People who are Blind or Partially Sighted

  • Assistance dogs are welcome at the Bell.
  • Assistance will be offered by the staff, to escort people to the bedrooms etc., if they are unaccompanied by a suitable adult.
  • Any forms or other information will be written down by a member of staff.
  • Staff are instructed to help by stating what food and drinks are available.

People who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing

Suitable pads and writing materials are available to help communication.

Disabled People in General

It is our policy to give the maximum assistance possible to any person entering the premises. If disabilities are not obvious we would appreciate prior notice to make sure that we can achieve our aim.

Our present facilities and policies include the following:

  • There is a disabled toilet on the ground floor level with access to Wilfred’s lounge.
  • Portable ramps are available to help wheelchair users to gain access to the premises and between adjoining ground floor rooms.
  • Access to the garden, and smoking shelter, is limited by virtue of a large step although a ramp may benefit some assisted wheelchair users.
  • We will attempt to satisfy most dietary requirements. If these are unusual some notice would be appreciated.
  • There is a door bell at the entrance to summon assistance for disabled people wishing to enter the premises.
  • Staff are trained to give any assistance necessary to enable hard of hearing persons to order drinks or food. Writing pads etc are in all bars if necessary and staff will read out menus etc to help those people who cannot easily see.
  • All staff are instructed that it is unlawful not to serve or discriminate against disabled persons.
  • Staff are trained to act in a helpful and thoughtful manner e.g. to serve people at their table if they cannot get to the bar or help customers by taking drinks etc to their table if they find it difficult to do so themselves.
